Palma · Sóller · Alcúdia · Formentor

Mallorca is bigger than the beach it sold you.

A mountain range with a wooden train running through it. A cave with a string quartet playing on the lake. A coastline no road reaches. Every tour on the island, reviewed and ranked.

The island end to end

From Palma, Mallorca opens west into mountains and east into caves.

Nearly every day trip sold on this island is a version of one of these six stops. Pick the direction first, then pick the tour.

Running since 1912

The wooden train to Sóller is still the best hour on Mallorca.

Thirteen tunnels, a climb over the Tramuntana and a drop into a valley of orange groves, in carriages that have barely changed in a century. At the far end a 1913 tram rattles down to the port. The line was laid to move fruit, not tourists, which is why it still goes where the modern roads do not bother.

Book these first

The Mallorca days that fill up before the flights do.

Six bookings carry most itineraries here: one boat, one cave, one train, one cliff road, one long dinner and one set of engines. This is the best version of each.

Underground

Mallorca has two famous caves, and they are not the same day out.

Drach has the big lake, the rowing boats and the live quartet playing in the dark. Hams is smaller, quicker and far easier to fit around an afternoon in Porto Cristo. Plenty of coach trips sell both; only one of them needs a whole day.

What it costs

What a day out on Mallorca actually costs.

Every tour on the site, sorted by price. The cathedral costs less than lunch. The catamaran costs less than a day of the hire car.

Under $60
114 tours

Cathedral and cave tickets, old-town walks, the tram, twenty minutes on a jet ski — the everyday island.

$60–150
186 tours

The proper day out: catamaran with lunch, the Drach coach trip, buggies, the full-island train-and-boat loop.

$150 and up
61 tours

Private boats, chartered days and the small-group Tramuntana tours that never see a coach park.

Only here

A wooden train, an underground concert, and a road that turns cars away.

Beaches and boat trips belong to the whole Mediterranean. These three belong to Mallorca alone.

Built for oranges

The Sóller Train

Five wooden carriages leave Plaça d’Espanya in Palma, climb into the Serra de Tramuntana and pass through thirteen tunnels before dropping into a valley of orange groves. At the far end a 1913 tram carries you down to the port. The line was laid to move fruit to the capital, which is why it still runs where the modern roads do not bother to go.

Under Porto Cristo

The Concert on the Lake

The Coves del Drach finish at Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes anywhere. The lights go out, and a string quartet plays from a rowing boat drifting across the water while everyone sits in the dark. Then you are rowed back yourself. Entry runs on timed slots, and the good ones go early.

Shuttle-only in summer

The Formentor Road

Twenty kilometres of hairpins along a cliff spine to a lighthouse above the sea. In peak season private cars are turned back near Port de Pollença and the road runs on shuttle buses only — which is why most travellers now arrive by boat from Alcúdia and see the cliffs from below, the better angle anyway.

Plan backwards

Book these before you land in Mallorca.

Most of the island can be sorted from the hotel the night before. These cannot — they run on timed entry, small boats, settled weather and a licence you have to be holding on the day.

  1. 01Caves of Drach Day Trip & Optional Caves of HamsEntry is timed and capped, and the concert slots go first. Coach trips take the good ones weeks ahead.
  2. 02Off/On Road Buggy Tour with 2 or 4 SeaterThe driver needs a full licence in hand on the day. Summer slots go long before the airport bus.
  3. 035-Hour Catamaran Cruise with Lunch & SwimOne boat, one departure, one lunch sitting. July and August sell out before the flights do.
  4. 04Sunrise or Sunset Hot Air Balloon FlightSunrise flights only leave in settled air and carry a handful of people. A weather cancellation in peak season means waiting days.
When the coast is off

When the tramuntana blows, the boats stay in.

A hard north wind cancels catamarans and sea caves at a few hours’ notice, and August afternoons sit in the high thirties. Both have the same answer: go inland and get under something. Caves, cellars, cloisters and kitchens do not care what the sea is doing.
